WSDC events: What's really behind them?

Imagine this: You're on the dance floor, next to a partner you were randomly assigned two minutes ago. What song will play? No idea – the DJ decides. And that's exactly the competition. Welcome to Jack & Jill, the heart of every WSDC event. 🎲

Wait a minute – WSDC?

The World Swing Dance Council (WSDC) is essentially the governing body for West Coast Swing. A non-profit organization, founded in 1993, it certifies events worldwide and maintains the official points registry. The WSDC itself doesn't organize events – but if an event bears the WSDC seal, you know it will feature international pros, workshops, parties that last until the early hours, and official competitions where you can earn points.

There are over 400 such events worldwide – in the USA, Europe, Australia, and beyond. And the best part: some of them are right on your doorstep. 🇩🇪

Collecting points – how does that work?

In Jack & Jill, you compete alone, are randomly assigned partners, and improvise to music you don't know. No choreography, no plan – just genuine social dancing. If you make it to the final and place, you get points.

These points are entered into the worldwide WSDC registry. As soon as you earn your first point, you automatically receive your own WSDC ID – free of charge, no registration required. From then on, anyone (including you!) can track your dance career online. Your points will stay with you for life. Click here to access the points registry.

Your points help you progress through the levels: Newcomer → Novice → Intermediate → Advanced → All-Star → Champion. And because the levels are standardized worldwide, a Novice in Germany is the same as a Novice in the USA. Your level travels with you around the world.

To begin with, it's enough to know that as a beginner, you'll start in the Newcomer division – it's designed specifically for your first time. Just one point will get you into Novice. 🚀

And now?

You don't have to compete to enjoy a WSDC event – the workshops and social dancing alone are worth the trip. But if you get that Jack & Jill feeling: the Newcomer Division is waiting for you.

How an event weekend actually unfolds – from arrival to the last party – we'll tell you in our next blog post. Stay tuned! ✨
