Why a potato as our WCS mascot? 🥔✨

Have you ever wondered why the tuber represents our team? The answer is a story of transformation, of togetherness.

Hold on, and a healthy dose of self-irony.

The nickname "German potato" has a surprisingly long history. It all began in the 19th century as a regional term for people in the Ore Mountains who primarily ate potatoes. In the 1960s, it became a cultural exchange: Italian guest workers and Germans traded potato comparisons with spaghetti. And in the 2000s, "potato" finally entered youth slang—similar to "Alman"—to describe characteristics perceived as typically German.

The funny thing is? The stereotype that we eat a lot of potatoes isn't even true. Germany ranks only in the lower middle of the EU in per capita potato consumption. So the tuber has established itself as a cultural symbol, even though Germans don't actually eat nearly as many potatoes as everyone thinks.

Today, many Germans have humorously adopted the term for themselves – as a tongue-in-cheek self-description. We embrace this spirit. We are WCS Potatoes, and we stand by it. 🥔

The Basic Potato: Our Foundation

At first glance, the potato seems unassuming, down-to-earth, and perhaps even "basic." And that's precisely the solid foundation our "Basic Potato" represents. Anyone who dances WCS knows: without good basics, nothing works! But in reality, it's an absolute chameleon without ever losing its core. Just like West Coast Swing! Whether we're dancing to pop, blues, soulful R&B, or hip-hop – our dance adapts effortlessly to every musical style, changes its vibe, and yet remains unmistakably our own.

Potato meets community! West Coast Swing is all about shared laughter, togetherness, and the genuine joy of movement. The potato is one of the world's most versatile foods, capable of radically changing its shape without ever losing its core. This makes it the perfect metaphor for our cosmopolitan scene, which unites us all through a shared passion.

The Regionals: Local charm on the dance floor

Of course, it doesn't stop at just one potato. Besides the faithful "Basic Potato," there are many other characters. Since our community is at home everywhere, the " Regional Potatoes" bring our local charm to the dance floor:

  • With its cool head and fresh, maritime flair, the “Ahoi Potato” ensures the perfect flow in the north.

  • The “Jecke Potato” exudes pure joie de vivre and exuberance – just as one knows it from the Rhineland.

  • Follow our Instagram channel and never miss a new tuber.

The indispensable community potatoes

Just as versatile as the potato can be prepared are the rolls that make our WCS weekend the magical experience we love so much.

Die Comp Potato

Nights when your feet are already aching, but you just can't leave the dance floor? We have DJ Potato to thank for that. And what would an event be without Comp Potato ? Whether it's your first Jack & Jill or a joyful Strictly with your best friends – she's right in the thick of it. Event Director Potato works tirelessly behind the scenes, organizing everything and making our weekend dance haven possible.

And that was just the beginning! Look forward to our next article – where we'll be taking a detailed look at these wonderful community roles. Don't want to miss a single Potato? Then follow us on Instagram and stay tuned as the tuber conquers the German WCS scene. 🥔
