What is West Coast Swing?

West Coast Swing, often simply called WCS, is a partner dance from the USA that originated in California in the 1940s. It is the official state dance of California and today one of the fastest-growing dance scenes worldwide – including in Germany. Unlike many other partner dances, WCS is not danced in a circle, but on a so-called slot – an imaginary line on the floor. This gives the dance its typical aesthetic: fluid, grounded, elegant, and open to individual interpretation.

What makes WCS special?

WCS is an improvised partner dance. This means you don't learn a fixed choreography that you simply follow through, but rather dance each song spontaneously with your partner. This makes it challenging on the one hand, but incredibly lively, creative, and exciting on the other.

A few characteristics that distinguish WCS from other dances:

Musically versatile: WCS can be danced to almost anything: blues, pop, R&B, hip-hop, even mellow rock songs. There is no "typical WCS music"—that's one of the dance's greatest strengths.

Suitable for all age groups: Because WCS is low to the ground and easy on the joints, it is accessible to people of all ages – from students to pensioners.

Leading and following on equal footing: WCS is based on clear yet sensitive communication between the lead and the follower. Both roles are active and creative – no one is merely "present."

What is the difference to other swing dance styles?

Although WCS, Lindy Hop and Boogie Woogie share the same historical roots, there are beautiful differences that make WCS unique:

The form: WCS is danced linearly on an imaginary line (the "slot"), while Lindy Hop is more circular.
The dance feel: WCS is fluid and does without the bouncing typical of Lindy Hop, the so-called "bounce".
The music: WCS is danced to almost anything today in 4/4 time, such as current pop, R&B, club music or blues!

Furthermore, WCS offers both dance partners wonderful freedom for creative improvisation and genuine dance conversation thanks to its elastic connection. A modern dance for every musical taste!

How do I begin?

The easiest way to get started is with a beginner's course at a dance school or WCS club near you. In Germany, regular courses are now offered in many cities – from Düsseldorf to Munich to Berlin.

Do I need to bring a dance partner?

No! In WCS classes, participants usually rotate partners. So you learn to dance with many different people. That's actually part of the concept: the more different partners you experience, the better your dancing will become.

Our 6-count basics are called: Sugar Push, Left Side Pass, and Under Arm Turn (six steps in the basic pattern). Don't be afraid of counting – it's faster in your body than in your head.

Do you know a basic step? Great – then you can immediately try out what you've learned at so-called socials: these are open dance evenings where the community comes together, music is playing, and people simply dance and socialize. This is the true heartbeat of the WCS scene.

How long will it take until I'm "good"?

WCS is a dance you can learn for a lifetime. But your main goal here is simply to have fun. Perfectionism isn't the right approach. WCS thrives on experimentation, laughing at mistakes, and growing together.
